Practicum Guidelines for Health Informatics
Overview
The IPHI 856/NRSG 856 – Health Informatics Practicum creates a venue in which each student has the opportunity to apply their course
knowledge. In the practicum course, students design an experience to facilitate the application of theories and research related to health
informatics. Each student will work with a mentor/preceptor to create an informatics project to be completed within the practicum.
• Emphasis is on the application of the information System Development Life Cycle (SDLC). See the next page for an image.
• Students also analyze the leadership and technical behaviors of various informatics roles.
Details
• Students must complete the majority of their informatics coursework prior to practicum so that they can implement their course
knowledge during the practicum. See prerequisite list below.
• The practicum requires 200 clock hours which can be taken over 1-3 semesters. 67 clock hours are required for each credit hour
enrolled. Each practicum semester will be graded separately.
• A practicum whose hours largely consist of shadowing and/or data entry will not be allowed.
• Students may not be paid for their practicum hours.
• The student selects a practicum site based on his/her interests. Typically, that aligns with the individual’s discipline-specific area.
• Important Note: Students must be enrolled in a minimum of 1 credit hour of practicum during their last semester in the informatics
program when the oral comprehensive exam is taken.
