Impact on nursing profession: The first and foremost impact of nursing shortage of nurses is the increased work load which directly affect the quality of patient care provided and also the patient’s safety. Further, it also affects negatively the nurses’ job satisfaction and further leads to high turnover (Duffield and O’Brien-Pallas, 2003).
Nursing shortage has decreased the nurse patient ratio due to which many times nurses are forced to cross their professional boundaries and perform interdisciplinary tasks without proper training. In addition, in many cases nurses are expected to perform tasks which are unrelated to nursing profession which include food delivery and retrieving food trays, patient shifting, housekeeping duties etc.( Aiken et al., 2001). Impact on public: Besides, affecting nurses and nursing profession, shortage of nurses also has profound effect on public health and patient safety. Nursing shortage increases workload which in turn decreases time of nurse patient interaction and care. Lack of time affects in many ways the patient care. Nurses do not get time to collaborate or communicate with physicians which in certain cases may lead to severe consequences.
