Translational research is form of clinical research that was first seen around 1993 (Rubio et al, 2010). So as far as research goes this is a fairly new was to look into things. There is also no clear definition of translational research, but essentially it encompasses two areas of translation one being the information obtained in pre-clinical studies, lab research and the other being the adaptation of best practices in the community with their cost effectiveness (Rubio et al, 2010). There are three levels of translational research, starting with T1, which involves the beginning research or development of an intervention, including the lab research, observational research and phase I and II clinical trials (Translational Research, n.d.). The second level is T2 the translation to patients, testing these interventions and their efficacy on the patient populace, including phase III clinical trials, studying how these new interventions work with disease processes and creating new guidelines with up-to-date information (Translational Research, n.d.). The third level is T3 disseminating and implementation of all the research into daily practice, creating the research evidence found into evidence-based practices across the profession (Translational Research, n.d.).

From this information there isn’t a difference between evidence-based practice and translational research, it is just a way to get to evidence based practice. By following the ‘three T’s’, the final step is to put all of this research into practice, as evidence-based practice. For public health this means the most up to date care and information as the natural progression of translational practice ends with practice. If there is no research being done in the area however, this has a negative impact on the population, as there is not up to date EPB related to that disease process and/or its co morbidities.

Hello S,

I agree how transitional research can help improve outcome in public health by helping to translate the evidence in to practice which has been shown to improve patient outcomes. Oppositely the lack of the ability to implement EPB into practice has shown to be correlated with poor patient outcomes related to the gap in the ability translate EPB (Tilter, 2018). I work in a facility that is striving to be a Magnet hospital and we work on EBP projects and practices to implement. Many times, we find a lot of evidence and research but little on how to implement into practice, As I stated in my post gestational hypertension has an abundance of Evidence stating women need to be induced early related to the hypertension, but little in how to implement. The nurses I manage are often frustrated with the lack of direction from the physicians and at times the physicians rush to implement the induction of women early but have little thought or direction the infant’s outcome, due to this we have had higher admissions to the NICU. The women have safer care but the babies who are late-preterm have higher morbidities as a unit I do plan to take the translation research steps you stated to try to help improve care on our patients.  Identify the different levels of translational research NUR 550. it’s interesting because of everything I have learned through my years in university my answer in my head to the question what is EBP, was exactly what it sounds like- utilizing evidence found by researchers regarding the best way to do a certain task in care for a patient- then this research is put into practice by making it protocol or policy at the facility. But after reading some of my fellow students responses and posts, i’m finding out it is not that easy. I know for myself in working in dialysis there was research found regarding max UFR for patients should be 13ml/kg/hr, and through my career at a certain facility I saw nurses not following this protocol and it baffled me, because this is what is best for the patient- the research showed it, why are you not doing it? And because the facility had it as a kind of word of mouth protocol and not a facility protocol in witting there was really nothing that could be done about it. Because I felt like my answer was incorrect I looked and on found a page explaining What is Evidence Based Practice in Nursing? (n.d.) which of course stated EBP is the implementation of research into practice, but they also went into the three levels of EBP, level A is utilizing evidence from randomized control trials, meta analysis, and clinical practice guidelines; Level B is utilizing evidence clinical trials with no randomization that are well controlled, clinical cohort studies, uncontrolled studies, epidemiological studies, quantitative/qualitative studies and case controlled studies; Level C is utilizing evidence from meta synthesis, consensus viewpoint and expert opinion. There are also multilevel clinical practice guidelines that may encompass more than one level (What is evidence, n.d.).
