Discussion: Workplace Environment Assessment

How healthy is your workplace?

You may think your current organization operates seamlessly, or you may feel it has many issues. You may experience or even observe things that give you pause. Yet, much as you wouldn’t try to determine the health of a patient through mere observation, you should not attempt to gauge the health of your work environment based on observation and opinion. Often, there are issues you perceive as problems that others do not; similarly, issues may run much deeper than leadership recognizes.

There are many factors and measures that may impact organizational health. Among these is civility. While an organization can institute policies designed to promote such things as civility, how can it be sure these are managed effectively? In this Discussion, you will examine the use of tools in measuring workplace civility.

To Prepare:

  • Review the Resources and examine the Clark Healthy Workplace Inventory, found on page 20 of Clark (2015).
  • Review and complete the Work Environment Assessment Template in the Resources.

By Day 3 of Week 7

Post a brief description of the results of your Work Environment Assessment. Based on the results, how civil is your workplace? Explain why your workplace is or is not civil. Then, describe a situation where you have experienced incivility in the workplace. How was this addressed? Be specific and provide examples.

By Day 6 of Week 7

Respond to at least two of your colleagues on two different days by sharing ideas for how shortcomings discovered in their evaluations and/or their examples of incivility could have been managed more effectively.

Incivility in the workplace happens everywhere and to many people everyday. When two people interact, each brings filters that include attitude, assumptions, intentions, beliefs, emotional state, physical conditions, history, culture and experiences (Marshall & Broome, 2017). Based on my workplace environment results, it was determined as barely healthy. My numbers were scattered all over the place but the main number I had was neutral.

There are many reasons why the workplace might be determined not civil. The main thing I see if the communication and teamwork is lacking. There is no problem that is completed without a team (Laureate Education, 2009). Some individuals treat others very poorly and give them a harder load of patients or are not helpful. Throughout my time working in mental health, there have been many conflicts that have come up within the workplace. The most recent was a situation with an aggressive patient and need multiple staff to help de-escalate the situation. There was a staff member who was refusing to help and standing in the nurse’s station saying, “I don’t know what is going on so I am not helping”. As a charge nurse, I had to go speak with this individual and talk about ways we could improve for next time to be a team player. Communication was brought up to the staff member. She felt like the situation wasn’t communicated to her so she didn’t know how to help. We talked about improving communication with each team member making sure it is clear. Engaging in clear, courteous communication fosters a civil work environment, improves teamwork and ultimately enhances patient care (Clark, 2015). At the end, we talked as a team on how we could improve our communication for our teamwork but also our patients.
