My name is Sa… and I am a current travel nurse who has been coast to coast in the last year dealing with Covid like most of you. I love my job but it has been so draining lately and like most hospitals across the states, short staffed. That being said, I am excited to start this program and continue my journey on a path to more educational growth.

Walden’s vision, mission, goals, and social change initiatives discuss producing practitioners with a positive social change for the greater global good (2021).  This goes hand in hand with my professional and academic goals to becoming a scholar-practitioner because that is exactly what I want to do. I want to become a family nurse practitioner to help all of the people in the community, not just one population. I have huge goals and I want to make the community better for everyone in it, from children to geriatrics. I want to take my knowledge and apply it in every situation that arises for the greater good of the community. Each class here at Walden is an opportunity to gain more knowledge towards my goals of being able to help more and more people. The MSN program outcomes coincide with my goals because the outcomes discuss lifelong learning, legal and ethical integrity, use knowledge gained to positively affect the community, effectively communicate, support diversity, demonstrate information literacy, and practice positive social change (Walden University, 2021). In order to be the best scholar-practitioner, we need to take into consideration and continue towards all of the program outcomes. Information literacy I think is a major one because knowing when to step back and realize that you do not understand something but knowing where to go for the information and answers is the biggest deal. That falls into place with lifelong learning because as a health care professional, we never stop learning. Throughout the program I hope to gain the skills and knowledge to achieve and take into practice all of the outcomes to be the best family nurse practitioner that I can be.

Networking is one of the most important pieces to help achieve my professional and academic goals because, it is a matter of knowing where to go for answers or who to go with for questions we may have. Knowing other nurse practitioners, educators, nurses, doctors that we trust and can talk to about educational success and our goals is key to our own success. Having a good network of individuals that I can go to throughout the program will help me achieve my goals because I may need a letter of recommendation, a job, advice, etc. and those individuals will be there to help with that. “The vast majority of jobs are obtained through networking” (Schmidt, K., 2020). It is the key to advancement and success in the long term. Once, that network bond in formed they may even turn into lifelong colleagues that would be available if needed when first starting out as a practitioner and so on. There are so many different ways to network but nowadays networking is at out fingertips. Social media is the main way these days, websites like Linkedin, instagram, and twitter are just some examples of different online platforms that can be used for networking (Wofford, P., 2018). With the access to the internet almost 24/7 networking is a million times easier today than it was 50 years ago.

Discussion – Week 1

My Goals and University Vision and Mission

I have been a nurse for seven years and in these seven years I have become interested in advancing my career.  The only way to do so, is by achieving my Master’s degree.  In order to achieve my goal in the next five to ten years of a nursing leader, I have decided on the educational path of Nurse Executive.  I began my search for the right program last year to help achieve this goal.

When I came across Walden University I was at first skeptical.  I didn’t know if this was the right school for me.  My first inquisition of the program gave me a different insight after speaking to an admissions recruiter.  Walden University’s Mission states “The College of Nursing envisions recognition as a preeminent 21st-century school of nursing in which the contributions of nursing, health, and related sciences will transform the provision of nursing services along the continuum of care and across the human life span to meet the needs of individuals and local and global communities.” (Walden University, 2020, para. 4).  This statement helped my decision of choosing this University to help me gain my professional growth.  The words “the contributions of nursing, health and related sciences will transform the provision of nursing services” (Walden University, 2020, para. 4) explains what a Nurse Executive is and what the goal of the program entails.  I wanted a school that would be more than just a degree but would show a different insight by the words of their Mission and Vision. Outcomes and Perspectives

Sue Subocz, PhD states in her message “Throughout your journey toward graduation, please remember that you are never alone.” (Subocz, PhD, S., 2020) and this is more than words to myself.  The online catalog page on the Walden University website is an excellent guide for academic growth.  The catalog helps direct students to different online resources to help guide and grow personal academic growth.  In my current role, I am able to utilize these resources to help grow in leading teams and develop leadership relationships.  My goal is to be a Nurse Leader and Walden University has shown different ways to help grow me academically and professionally throughout the program outcomes and perspectives.  I want to grow into a Leader that transforms nursing to another level.  Receiving my Master’s degree from Walden University will help achieve this goal.

My Successful Vision and  Mission 

My journey as a nurse has been full of learning moments over the past 3 years. I’ve become more aware and interested in patients requiring mental health evaluations. I have become part of the biggest health care system of United States, The Department of Veterans Affairs which its population tend to be related more often with PTSD, depression and sadly suicide . My personal and professional goal is integrate my self in to the psychiatric , mental health and suicide prevention team. This decision comes with a price, and that price is enhance my knowledge, prepared my self and obtain a master degree.  My current experience do not exposed my self 100% to this population because currently i am part of the Spinal Cord Injury and Disorders team. Spinal Cord patients often presents with depression and anxiety, in most cases we refer this patient to a psychiatric  or psychological evaluations which made me part of this case management  process, Walden University 2011a, para4. I have discovered my passion in this population mostly margined by society. Public service is my passion and I will be fulfilling my duty to my country in a way that is unique and this experience humble my self, and help me not to take for granted what this patients don’t have, mental stability. Walden University was recommended by co workers, and supervisors, suggesting that this program is fully accredited by the VA, a quick research made me corroborate this information. Walden University  has the right approach and experience  to help nurses provide state of the art  graduate education. My busy schedule of 12 hr. shifts plus family responsibilities was one of the reasons i decided to continue my education online. According to the Walden University (2011a) the vision to transform nurses so that they can help the community goes along with my desire to make a better health care system for those who gave everything to this country. The SON mention that this program is academically rigorous and contextual relevant. Walden University 2011a, para4.

Incorporation of social change

      As the Walden University defined positive and social change ”a deliberate process of creating and applying ideas, strategies and action to promote the worth dignity and development of individuals, communities, organizations, institutions cultures and societies. My passion is with the community of veterans and the public service. A community that requires special attention with psychiatric and psychological evaluations has to come from the very finest providers. The suicide rate among veterans unfortunately is a disturbing high one, approximately 20 veterans every year commit suicide. With the opportunity of becoming a nurse practitioner i will be contributing, excel the Veteran health care system

I admire the passion that you have for the mental health area. Its amazing to hear about how each as individual have a specific passion within the health care field. In opinion it honestly takes love, patience, and passion to work with this specific population of people. I can relate to your statement about as a nurse we are on a continuous learning platform. MY GOALS & UNIVERSITY VISION AND MISSION

Although I’ve only been a nurse for a year and a half, I’ve realized the importance of furthering my education and obtaining my master’s degree. In the future, if I do not plan to continue bedside nursing, I want to be fully prepared in my education to move on to a new career. For the past couple of months, I’ve been looking into different nursing programs that offered a Master’s Degree in Nursing as well as speaking to my colleagues about how they feel about the schools they are enrolled in. Almost everyone I know who is in the process of obtaining their master’s degree is enrolled with Walden, so I decided to look further into the program for myself. As a full time nurse and mother, I realized that Walden’s flexibility would be the best fit for me. When I made the decision to enroll, I chose the nurse executive program and I have hopes to get my post-master’s certificate in nursing education after I graduate.

Being a nurse executive entails striving to continually improve the health of patients, families and communities, as well as upholding professional and ethical principles (NursePractionerSchools, 2020). Part of being a nurse executive also means having great critical thinking skills as well as having an understanding of concepts of evidence-based practices (NursePractionerSchools, 2020). After reading Walden University College of Nursing’s vision and mission statements, I realized that the degree I obtain will help me to be the best nurse executive that I can be. According to the Walden University College of Nursing (2020a), their vision is for graduates to transform nursing to meet the needs of individuals and communities. The College of Nursing’s mission (2020a) is to provide education for nursing professionals seeking enhancement of critical thinking skills, abilities to select and implement evidence-based practices, and core and specialty nursing knowledge in order to transform society. CONCLUSIONS

I strive to be able to apply all goals and outcomes listed by Walden University to my professional career in the future and will work my hardest to do so. Some outcomes that I inspire to achieve the most are: to facilitate positive social change and use my knowledge to positively impact where I work, in my community and society; apply my learning to specific problems and challenges in my workplace and professional settings; practice legal and ethical integrity in my professional work, and support diversity and multiculturalism within my profession, community and society (Walden University b, 2020). Although the journey might be long and hard, with the help of my professional and academic network that I develop inside and outside of school, I know I will able to achieve all goals that are set.

I have been a nurse for 20 years in clinical and managerial positions.  The pace of technology in healthcare has increased exponentially since I began my career in nursing.  With continuous technological advancements in healthcare, one must be willing to embrace change to succeed.  My philosophy in nursing is to continue to be a lifelong learner; my experiences with technology is the driving force has led me to have an unwavering interest in Nursing Informatics.

My Vision for my time at Walden

           I chose Walden because their mission statement promotes a “…diverse array of nursing professionals seeking enhancement of critical thinking skills, abilities to select and implement evidence-based practices, and core and specialty nursing knowledge in order to transform society” (Walden University, 2020). This conforms with my goals to become a practitioner of change, not only for myself with obtaining the knowledge in nursing informatics, but to be able to transform individuals, communities and organizations with simplified navigation and convenient systems, not just another mobile application.

The MS in Nursing Informatics at Walden “prepares nurses to more effectively utilize information technology to enhance the quality of patient care” (Walden University, 2020). This specialization will allow me to optimize the knowledge and experience I already have and enhance my career pursuits. This will enable me to leverage innovation and technology in any healthcare system.

Social Change in My Pursuits

Walden University (2020) defines “positive social change as a deliberate process of creating and applying ideas, strategies, and actions to promote the worth, dignity, and development of individuals, communities, organizations, institutions, cultures, and societies”.  This aligns with the core values associated with the nursing profession. In my practice I have educated, mentored and taken care of patients and co-workers.  I am optimistic that I can integrate Nursing Informatics into my practice, although I understand my focus will shift from direct patient care to indirect. Walden University (2020) states that “Positive social change results in the improvement of human and social conditions”. While I might not be directly impacting patient care, facilitating nursing care by effective use of technology ultimately improves quality of care outcomes and decreases frustration from healthcare workers. This parallels my goals and serves as a solid foundation for my current and future practice.

I can relate to your reasons for choosing Walden. I work with the Central Arkansas Veterans Administration. As Walden (2020) states scholar-practitioners bridge the gap between academia and the real world…to solve complex problems in their profession”(para 2).  Have you though about being a clinical nurse leader or nurse educator?  Each unit at the VA I work at has both these positions. They’re both equally important, but they operate independently so they are more effective. Miltner (2020) speaks of the CNL position being “invaluable resource that must be acknowledged and used to the full scope of its potential”(p.267). The best clnical nurse leaders have training working, and are able to do the research, and analyze literature in order to bring about positive change for our nurses and our patients within the healthcare systems. Being apart of the VA system for 15 years, I’m sure you know resources within your hospital that can help you to hone in on what you want to do with your degree.

What local nursing organization are you apart of? A study done in Russia revealed the main reason for membership includes access to knowledge; confirmation of their qualifications and professional skills; and upward professional mobility (Rowley, Jia, & Wallace, 2020). I am a member of a local organization, Little Rock Black Nurses. Association of Arkansas. I have found this group helpful for a number of reasons, specifically the diversity in the work background of  nurses.  It gives me the opportunity to network with nurses with an array of experience. If you’re not a member I’d consider finding an organization that is active, and I think it will prove to be helpful to you throughout this program.

Chanel, I am so excited to hear that you have chosen not only the Emergency Department as your specialization but that you have intentions of going forward to educate our new younger generations of nurses coming through the rigorous program. The ED has been my home for 15 years and I love seeing nurses coming in green and blossom into successful independent warriors in the ED. Reading your discussion I am going to guess you have either just completed your orientation or are coming up on completing it. Congratulations! I commend your hard work and dedication and I am sure you will have lots of experiences by the time you move into the role of instructor.

Educating new nurses inside or outside of a clinical setting is crucial to their success in their career. In an article by the Journal of Emergency Nursing it talks about how imperative it is that new graduates coming into the ED spend time “ reinforcing their knowledge, learn and practice new techniques, increase their organization skills, develop their ability to prioritize, and become comfortable with the emergency nurses role” (Loiseau et al., 2003). As an instructor you will be able to help lay the foundation for your students to be successful when they enter the world of nursing. Taking mentoring classes and learning from your own experiences through your orientation process will be an asset that you will be able to bring forward to your own students someday. Classroom settings are great foundations, but they are not as valuable as real-world experiences in my opinion. A simulation manikin cannot replace the hands-on touch of a person but with your knowledge you can bring that simulation to life.

I remember crying more then not during my first year of nursing and I also remember how important my preceptor was for me but also remembering everything my instructors had taught me in school. They brought a wealth of knowledge to me personally and professionally and it holds true today when I sit back and think about my own path. Nursing burnout and stress are a big factor and you are correct that communication will help you to improve your overall goal of developing well rounded nurses. Nurses are in short supply and high demand and stress plays a big role in that. In an article in the Nursing Research journal it talks primarily about “the effect that stress has on the health and performance of nursing students can be mediated by other life stressors, as well as personal, behavioral, social and environmental factors that are experienced during school or earlier in life” (Alvarez et all., 2019).  Every one of us who has gone through nursing school has experienced stress and burnout and we had not even stepped foot inside of a hospital. As a leader and educator you can help your students develop coping skills to take on the stress they will experience, as well as, give them your own experiencing and how you worked through challenges you faced. You will also be able to motivate your students to push through those days of doubts and show them not every day is gloomy, there are many exciting and rewarding days in the field of nursing. Networking Opportunities

In this discussion board I will introduce myself, discuss Walden University’s foundation in relation to my aspirations, and the importance of professional networking. It is important to understand that each nurse has a unique background that influences the care they provide. Gaining nursing experiences and creating professional relationships can provide life long positive influences impacting patient’s lives, families, and communities.

Self-Introduction

My name is Krystal Simmons. I have worked in the healthcare system for over fifteen years in various settings. Some of my favorite nursing experiences include working in the primary care setting for seven years and the medical floor for almost two years.  I live in rural southern Ohio, married with two girls. In my free time I enjoy nature by running, hiking, kayaking, and swimming.

Dreams, Missions, and Visions

The vision and mission statements Walden University stands by promotes a modern curriculum in a challenging atmosphere that collaborates with each nursing professional’s lifestyle meeting the needs of individuals, families, and communities (Walden University, 2021). My plan for school is to become a family nurse practitioner and continue working in my rural hometown. I started this journey in 2017 after watching several nursing students complete clinicals at my primary care office. In 2019 I moved from the primary care setting to the inpatient medical floor to expand on my nursing background and experience. I feel that working on the medical floor has helped me become a better leader which will enhance my nursing as a practitioner in the future. Walden University’s MSN learning outcomes lists qualities a nursing professional will possess at the end of the program which includes the ongoing commitment to professional development, enhanced communications skills, and evidenced-based high-quality healthcare delivery skills (Walden University, 2021).

Academic and Professional Networking

Starting out as a state tested nursing assistant in 2003, I have learned that continued education opportunities, new experiences, and effective communication skills are some core materials that make up good nursing professionals. With almost twenty years of service in the nursing field I have developed several professional mentors and role models who have inspired and motivated me to strive for my nurse practitioner degree. The American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) is just one group of professionals aimed at improving the health of the nation by supporting the advancement of the nurse practitioner role (American Association of Nurse Practitioners, 2021). Professional networking in the nursing field can take place in work and in continuing education settings. Professional networking within nursing professionals can influence healthcare systems, advance careers, and promote professional support in an ever changing, demanding profession (Schmidt, K., 2020).

In conclusion, I feel that gaining new experiences, creating new relationships, and learning to provide modern high quality evidenced based care will aide in my professional nursing development. Optimizing nursing experiences and relationships improves overall outcomes in all nursing aspects.
