Advocating for the Nursing Role in Program Design and Implementation

Nurses and health professionals from other specialty areas can and should collaborate to develop effective programs. Nurses bring specialties to the table and through effective partnerships deliver better designs and programs that meet quality objectives. Nurses also advocate for healthcare programs through collaborations (Milstead & Short, 2019). Through an interview with a nurse, the article demonstrates the role that nurses play in designing and implementing new healthcare programs.

Answer to Question # 1

Nurses play a significant role in the health care field that include providing a link between healthcare professionals and patients’ needs. An essential aspect of nursing is caring of individuals with mental illnesses or disease. These individuals face challenges living with this condition that requires designing and implementing effective programs that lead to maximal care. One effective strategy in providing care to mental ill patients in the nursing practice is the use of home-based dancing therapy. The program that is designed by a fellow nurse and I involve using dancing as a therapy aimed at helping the mentally sick to enhance their cognition. The essence of the program is that since many adults aged 60 years and above present with mental disorders like Alzheimer’s disease, dementia and schizophrenia, dance therapy can improve their cognition and help them attain better outcomes (Jayalakshmi et al., 2017). Additionally, these individuals do not lead lives like everyone else because of their condition. Research studies show that using dance movement therapy (DMT) in nursing care practice can mitigate symptoms linked to mental health illnesses and conditions (Capello, 2018).

The average cost for the home-based Dance Movement therapy (DMT) is between $60-$100 per one-hour session. These are standard charges for dance therapies. The expected outcomes from these sessions is that it will assist the patients to mitigate adverse symptoms and improve their quality of life.

Answer to Question #2

The main target for this program consists of male and female adults dealing with different types of mental health illnesses or disorders. The program will have much emphasis on adults above sixty years with mental problems and incorporate their families as an effective way of enhancing participation and understanding of the DMT.

Answer to Question #3

Nurses play critical roles in health care provision as patient advocates and care providers based on their expertise and experience. Nurses are frontline care providers and understand patients’ needs in different situations. therefore, they design and implement evidence-based practice (EBP) interventions aimed at enhancing overall patient care and optimal outcomes. In this program, the nurse plays as critical role in its design and execution because she is the primary care provider. For instance, the nurse seeks the wellbeing of the adults using the program and uses effective communication skills to decrease body tension and improve adherence to DMT activities (Capello, 2018). The nurse ensures that patients understand interventions that will reduce depression and anxiety, chronic pain and isolation. It is the role of the nurse to assist mentally ill adults develop positive body image so that they can improve self-esteem and self-concept through the dance movement therapy.

Answer to Question #4

Nurses are patient advocates and play critical roles for their target populations. In this program, as a nurse advocate for the home-based DMT in the facility, my role is to ensure that all mentally ill patients get quality care which does not have to be necessarily in the facility but in the convenience of their homes. My input into the design decisions in the program is critical and it involves getting feedback from family members and relaying to the multidisciplinary team for effective implementation of these suggestions. As part of the team, I make recommendations on areas that need adjustments and improvements for effective delivery of optimal care. I also impact the design by ensuring that the program is based in homes for certain patients due to their condition and vulnerabilities while others get these benefits in the hospital settings.

Answer to Question # 5

Nurses play a critical role in care coordination when implementing healthcare programs. The coordination role entails monitoring multiple patents and their care needs to ensure quality outcomes and performance. The nurses also voice patient feedback and need for patient-centered care approach for effective delivery. Imperatively, the role and purpose differ between design and implementation. in this situation, nurses will be required to suggest or design care processes for better patient outcomes as demonstrated in the home-based DMT (Capello, 2018). Implementation entails the use of suggested processes in the design part. For example, providing dance movement therapy on individual basis from patients’ homes is practical approach due to the many adults presenting with mental illnesses. As such, because of its effectiveness, the organization implemented the strategy to mitigate effects of mental illness among the population.

Answer to Question #6

Effective design and implementation of healthcare programs like this one requires collective effort from the management, healthcare professionals, and nurses in practice. The use of inter-professional team in program implementation is critical as it ensures that all expertise exist in addressing any issue that may arise to impede optimal care outcomes (Kane et al., 2017). Collaboration of all these players is critical in accelerating the application process of such programs hence improving patient outcomes.

Conclusion

Designing and implementing health care programs for the mentally ill, especially elderly patients, are critical to the provision of better healthcare services.
